This special truck will save lives in road accidents, launched in India for the first time

How a Truck Mounted Attenuator Works: Vertis Infrastructure has officially launched India’s first Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) at Adore Campus, Pune. This state-of-the-art crash-absorption technology has been specially designed keeping in mind the safety of highway workers and drivers. This technology, which absorbs the intensity of collision during road accidents, has so far saved the lives of more than 100 people during trials, which clearly shows its effectiveness.

What is Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA)

TMA is a type of crash cushion system installed on the back of service vehicles, such as repair trucks, that are moving or parked on the highway. Its main objective is to reduce the impact of a high-speed collision from behind. When a vehicle collides with a service vehicle, this system absorbs the entire energy of the collision and reduces the speed of the vehicle in a controlled manner.

How does it save lives in accidents?

The TMA system significantly reduces the impact of shock on vehicle occupants during a collision. This reduces the risk of serious injury and death. It also acts as a safety shield for the workers doing construction and repair work on the side or middle of the highway. Rear-end accidents caused by speeding vehicles, which often prove fatal, can be prevented to a great extent with the help of TMA.

NHAI’s support and global example

This technology is also supported by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). According to NHAI officials, their aim is to take the country’s highways to “zero fatality” and technology like TMA can play an important role in achieving this goal. In countries like America and Europe, the use of such machines is mandatory for the safety of workers working on highways. Its trial was going on in India also since 2021, in which this technology has so far been successful in saving more than 100 lives.

what is the future plan

At present 20 units of TMA have been prepared. Of these, 8 units have been deployed during the launch event itself, while the remaining 12 units will be put on the roads in the next 10 days. In the coming time, there are plans to implement it on other national highway projects of the country also.

According to Zafar, Joint CEO of Vertis Infrastructure, “The objective of this project is to ensure the safety of highway workers working in hazardous conditions.” This initiative is being considered a major step towards making India’s rapidly growing highway network not only modern but also among the safest road networks in the world.
