According to a BEST spokesperson, this air-conditioned nine-metre Olectra bus was operated on wet lease and was running between Nagaradas Nagar to Bhandup station on 606 Ring Road route. According to preliminary information, the driver was trying to take a U-turn to take the bus towards a nearby depot when the bus went out of control, allegedly due to pressing the accelerator instead of the brake.
Local shopkeepers were the first to provide help. Eyewitnesses and locals say that due to encroachment and heavy crowd on the footpaths outside the station, pedestrians have to walk on the road. Police also say that this area is one of the most congested parts of Bhandup, where buses face difficulty in turning late in the evening.
It is noteworthy that this is a major accident related to BEST for the second consecutive December. On December 9 last year, nine people were killed and 37 were injured when a BEST bus collided in Kurla. Investigation is going on in the present case and further action is being taken on the basis of CCTV footage.
