NITI Aayog praised GBU, appreciated the initiative of Gujarat government
Gujarat Govt: NITI Aayog recently released a report on globalization of higher education, lauding the Gujarat government’s visionary initiative. The report praised Gujarat Biotechnology University (GBU) established in Gujarat International Finance Tech-City (GIFT City). The report described GBU as an ideal model for globalization of higher education in India.
GBU, the world’s first biotechnology university
In the year 2020, the Gujarat government had established GBU in GIFT City. GBU not only attracted foreign universities but also provided international level education to Indian students in the country, thereby solving the problem of brain drain. GBU was established from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. GBU is considered to be the world’s first biotechnology university. GBU is spread over 23 acres, in which a modern research facility worth more than Rs 80 crore has been developed. The campus of GBU is being developed with Rs 200 crores. NITI Aayog has described GBU as a benchmark for higher education reform.

This is how selection is done in GBU
Currently, Masters programs in Animal, Industrial, Plant and Environmental Biotechnology are being conducted in GBU. The syllabus of these courses has been prepared with the help of University of Edinburgh. GBU is selected at the national level through GAT-B examination. In the year 2025, students from 17 states came here.
Received research grants worth more than Rs 40 crore
The university has received more than 70 research grants worth more than Rs 40 crore. Apart from this, 37 teams have received assistance of more than Rs 2 crore in the form of startup grants. GBU has recently collected new research funds of Rs 8 to 10 crore. These achievements of GBU are being considered as a proud moment for the higher education sector of Gujarat.
