Lasith Malinga Returns To Sri Lanka Team: Now less than 40 days are left for the start of the ICC T20 World Cup. In such a situation, all the teams have started preparations. Sri Lanka has already announced the probable list of 25 players for the T20 World Cup. Now Sri Lanka has also included former fast bowler Lasith Malinga in the team. The T20 World Cup 2026 will be held between February 7 and March 8, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed Lasith Malinga as consultant-fast bowling coach for the national men’s team. Malinga, one of Sri Lanka’s greatest bowlers in white ball cricket, will be appointed for a short term period of one month to help him prepare for the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

What did Sri Lanka Cricket say?

Sri Lanka Cricket announces the appointment of Lasith Malinga as Consultant – Fast Bowling Coach for the National Men’s Team, SLC said on Tuesday. His appointment is on a short-term basis for one month, effective from December 15 to January 25, 2026. Malinga will assist in the preparation and development of Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers as part of their preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.”

Sri Lanka Cricket aims to capitalize on Malinga’s extensive international experience and death bowling expertise, particularly in the shortest format of the game, to strengthen Sri Lanka’s preparations for the upcoming World Cup. 42-year-old Malinga’s experience in T20 cricket has been excellent. Apart from international matches in the shortest format, this fast bowler has played franchise cricket all over the world.

Malinga’s career

Malinga took 101 wickets in 30 Tests for Sri Lanka, while he took 338 wickets in 226 ODI matches. He has taken 107 wickets in 84 T20 matches. Lasith Malinga was an important part of the Sri Lankan team that won the T20 World Cup in 2014. During his time in the team, Sri Lanka remained runner-up twice (2009 and 2012).

He was also runner-up in the 50-over World Cup twice (2007 and 2011). Malinga played for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians from 2008 to 2017 and again from 2019–2020.
