PM Modi also mentioned Khaleda Zia’s diplomatic role in his message and said that her contribution has been important in taking forward India-Bangladesh relations. He also recalled that he had met Khaleda Zia in 2015, a year after becoming the Prime Minister. PM Modi further wrote, “We hope that his thoughts and legacy will continue to guide our partnership. May his soul rest in peace.”

According to a statement issued by BNP, 80-year-old Khaleda Zia died at around 6 am on Tuesday. She was suffering from serious illness for the last few days. Khaleda Zia has been one of the most influential figures in Bangladeshi politics and her death is being considered a significant moment in the political history of the country.

Khaleda Zia’s death comes at a time when her son Tariq Rehman recently returned to Bangladesh from London after 17 years in exile. According to political analysts, this incident is considered extremely important for BNP and Bangladeshi politics.

Khaleda Zia became the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh in the year 1991. After this he completed his second term from 2001 to 2006. The most notable feature of his political career was his long and bitter political rivalry with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

It is noteworthy that this appreciation given by Prime Minister Modi on the death of Khaleda Zia has come at a time when his rival Sheikh Hasina is in exile in India. Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since her removal from the post of Prime Minister in August 2024. In this background, PM Modi’s statement is being considered important from the point of view of India-Bangladesh relations and regional politics.
