RBI News: ATM usage reduced in digital age; RBI’s Big Disclosure

RBI News: RBIAccording to the data, the number of ATMs used for cash withdrawals decreased slightly during the financial year 2024-25, while the number of bank branches increased. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a report, a total of 251,057 ATMs were active across the country by March 2025, up from 253,417 a year ago. There has been a relatively large decline in the ATM network of private sector banks. ATMs of private banks fell from 79,884 to 77,117 last year. ATMs of public sector banks fell from 1,34,694 to 1,33,544 last year. The report said the decline in the number of ATMs was mainly due to increasing digitization and closure of ATMs by both types of banks.

However, the number of independently operated white-label ATMs increased to 36,216 during this period. ATMs of public sector banks are equally distributed in rural, semi-urban, urban and metropolitan areas, while private and foreign banks have mainly focused on urban and metropolitan areas. The number of bank branches increased to 164,000 in the last financial year, a growth of 2.8 percent over the previous year. Public sector banks played an active role in opening new branches, opening two-thirds of their new branches in rural and semi-urban areas.

The share of private banks in new branches declined
The share of private banks in new branches fell from 67.3 percent to 51.8 percent. According to the report, the number of Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts (BSBDA) has increased to 724 million and the total has reached 3.3 lakh crore. Most of these accounts are operated through a bank correspondent model. Although the deposit insurance limit is being considered to be increased from Rs 5 lakh, 97.6 per cent of bank accounts were covered by this insurance by the end of the financial year 2024-25. Increasing technology is making progress in the banking sector as well.
