PCB ends Test head coach’s tenure

The Pakistan Cricket Board has opted to bring an early end to Azhar Mahmood’s stint as head coach of the national Test side, sources revealed. While his contract was valid until March 2026, Mahmood was released a few months ahead of schedule.

With Pakistan’s next Test series not scheduled until March 2026, a source familiar with the decision said the Board felt it was the right time to plan for a new red-ball coach and prepare for the future.

Azhar Mahmood, who has occupied several roles within Pakistan’s national setup in recent seasons, was serving a two-year contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board and had stepped into the Test head coach role last year.

Sources indicated that the PCB has begun the process of appointing a new red-ball coach, with a broader reshuffle of the support staff also under consideration.

Pakistan are set to begin their ICC World Test Championship campaign in March 2026 with an overseas series against Bangladesh, before heading to the West Indies in July and touring England later in August and September.

Pakistan will welcome Sri Lanka and New Zealand for home Test series in November–December 2026 and again in March 2027. Since early 2024, the Test side has been overseen by interim coaches Aaqib Javed and Azhar Mahmood, following the Pakistan Cricket Board’s split with Australian coach Jason Gillespie over differences related to selection.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has also begun the process of appointing a head coach for the national women’s side after choosing not to renew Muhammad Wasim’s contract once the ICC World Cup concluded in September–October.
