New Delhi. The Health Ministry of the Central Government has banned the drug Nimesulide used in pain and fever. The Health Ministry has ordered that the manufacturing, distribution and sale of all oral medicines of Nimesulide in dosage more than 100 mg is banned with immediate effect. The Central Government has imposed this ban under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940. The decision to ban Nimesulide was given by the Drugs Technical Advisory Board.

In the notification of ban on Nimesulide, the Health Ministry has said that the use of Nimesulide medicines in dosage more than 100 mg can be a risk to human health. In its notification, the Health Ministry has also said that a safe alternative to Nimesulide already exists. Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Experts expressed concern about Nimesulide, saying that it harms the liver. Now the Health Ministry’s move to ban Nimesulide is a step towards strengthening the safety of medicines and phasing out high-risk medicines.

According to the order of the Health Ministry, now neither any company will be able to manufacture Nimesulide medicine with dosage more than 100 mg nor it will be sold in the shop. Now patients will have to take medicines of less than 100 mg of Nimesulide and other options for pain and fever medicines. Companies manufacturing Nimesulide drug will also have to withdraw it from the market. It is being told that Nimesulide is sold less in the market. Small companies have been manufacturing this medicine. Those companies may face problems due to the government’s decision. Many medicines have already been banned in the country due to health risks.
