Srinagar. Fresh snowfall occurred at many places in the higher reaches of Kashmir. Also, the Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rain or snowfall at most places in the next 24 hours. Officials gave this information on Wednesday. Despite the snowfall, weather remained unusually warm in the valley with temperatures three to seven degrees above normal, weather department officials said.

He said parts of North Kashmir including Gurez in Bandipora, Gulmarg in Baramulla and Machil in Kupwara received fresh snowfall. There have been reports of light to moderate snowfall in high altitude areas also. The Meteorological Department has said that there may be light to moderate rain or snowfall at most places from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.

According to this, there is a possibility of moderate to heavy snowfall in some high and very high altitude areas of North and Central Kashmir. Light rain or snowfall may occur at isolated places on Friday also. He said that the minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar on Tuesday night was 2.3 degrees Celsius, which is 4.9 degrees Celsius more than the normal temperature for this time of the year.

Gulmarg remained the coldest place in the region, with the mercury dropping to minus 3.0 degrees Celsius, officials said. He said the minimum temperature in Pahalgam in south Kashmir was recorded at minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, which is seven degrees above normal, while the mercury remained at 1.4 degrees Celsius in Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley. The region is currently going through ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’ (a period of severe cold of 40 days). During this time, night temperatures usually drop three to eight degrees below the freezing point but the current temperature remains well above normal.
