On behalf of the Martin family, Adam Gilchrist confirmed the sudden hospitalization of his former Gold Coast Test and Western Australia teammate.

Regarding Australia’s legendary Test cricketer Martin Coe, Gilchrist said, “He is getting the best treatment and (Martin’s partner) Amanda and her family know that many people are sending their prayers and good wishes for him.” Chief executive Todd Greenberg wished Martin a speedy recovery on behalf of Cricket Australia. “I am saddened to hear about Damien’s illness. The best wishes of CA and the entire cricket community are with him at this time,” Greenberg said.
Many including former Test teammate Darren Lehmann and English cricket great Michael Vaughan sent their best wishes to Martin on social media. Former Australia coach Lehmann wrote, “Sending lots of love and prayers to Damien Martyn. Stay strong and keep fighting legend. Love to the family.” Recently on Christmas evening, Martin was active on social media and expressed his excitement for the fourth Test of the ongoing Ashes Test series.
Martin’s smooth stroke play was his hallmark as a player, and he averaged 46.37 with the bat in 67 Tests for Australia. Born in Darwin, the right-handed batsman made his Test debut at the age of 21 in the 1992/93 home series against the West Indies, replacing the late Dean Jones, and went on to captain Western Australia at the age of 23.
The last time Australia won an away series in India, he was player of the series, scoring the highest runs in four of Australia’s eight innings in the 2004 Border-Gavaskar Trophy contest. His highest score in Test was 165 runs, which he made against New Zealand in 2005. This was one of 13 Test centuries that Martyn scored while wearing the baggy green cap.

Martin retired from Test cricket midway through the 2006/07 Ashes series, and played his last match at the Adelaide Oval that summer. Martin also played 208 ODIs, in which he averaged 40.8 and scored an unbeaten 88 when Australia defeated India in the 2003 World Cup final. After retirement, he also tried his hand at commentary, but in recent years he has mostly stayed away from the limelight.
