Surgeon sitting in Shanghai performed robotic surgery in Mumbai hospital

Mumbai . Surgeons from Shanghai, 5,000 kilometers away, have created history by performing a successful operation on a patient admitted in Mumbai-based Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. This is India’s first cross-border remote robotic surgery, which was performed by Dr. TB Yuvaraja from Shanghai city of China. This marks the first cross-border treatment of the Toumai Remote Robotic Surgery System in India after receiving approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO).

Complex urological surgeries like radical prostatectomy and partial nephrectomy were successfully performed on two patients in Mumbai. These surgeries were completely conducted by a remote specialist with the help of robotic technology. The Toumai system is currently the only robotic platform to receive study approval by the US FDA for tele-surgery. Dr. Yuvaraja, who has performed more than 4,100 robotic surgeries so far, described this achievement as revolutionary for healthcare services.

Dr. Santosh Shetty, CEO and Executive Director of the hospital, said that Kokilaben Hospital has become the first institution in India to perform intercontinental remote surgery. This success was the collective collaboration of doctors, nursing staff, technical experts and engineering teams from Mumbai and Shanghai. This will not only usher in a new era of telesurgery in the country but will also decide the direction of global health services in the future.
