Cold may increase with rain and cold wave, Meteorological Department issued warning
As the new year 2026 begins, the weather has started showing its colors in North and Central India. Amidst the harsh cold, dense fog and changing temperatures, people are once again having to struggle with winter. The latest forecast of the Indian Meteorological Department has made it clear that at present there is no complete relief from the cold. Even though there may be a slight increase in temperature in the next one or two days, after this the weather will become harsh again and the cold will become stronger again. The possibility of snowfall in the hilly states and rain in the plains has started affecting normal life as well as travel and transportation. The beginning of the new year seems to be challenging for people amid warnings of fog and cold wave in many parts of North India including Delhi-NCR.
The Meteorological Department says that the minimum temperature in North-West India may increase by about 2 to 4 degrees Celsius for the next two days. Due to this, there will be a slight reduction in cold. However, after this the situation will change again and the temperature may fall again by 2 to 4 degrees in the next three days. The same situation will be seen in Central India also, where the temperature will first increase by 2 to 3 degrees and then go down. Similar weather patterns will continue in Eastern India also.

Cold wave warning in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi
Meanwhile, fog and cold wave are going to increase the problems of the people. The Meteorological Department has warned that there may be dense to very dense fog during night and morning hours in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi till January 5. Fog will remain in eastern Uttar Pradesh till January 2, while dense fog is likely to persist in western Rajasthan till January 3. Apart from this, cold wave may occur in some areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi between January 3 and 5. There are chances of cold and intense weather in Rajasthan on 5th and 6th January. The effect of cold wave can also be seen in Himachal Pradesh between 2 to 4 January.
There may be heavy snowfall in the mountains
The weather can be even more harsh in hilly areas. There is a possibility of heavy rain or snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and surrounding areas on January 1. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may also receive light to moderate rain and snowfall till January 2. This season can be exciting as well as challenging for the tourists who come to the mountains to celebrate the New Year.

It may rain in these states
Talking about the plains, there are chances of light rain in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan and Western Uttar Pradesh on January 1. Cold may increase further after rain. The weather will be active in South India also. Warning of rain, thunderstorm and lightning along with strong winds has been issued in Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Dense fog was seen in Delhi-NCR in the morning on the first day of the New Year, due to which visibility was significantly reduced. Light rain was also recorded at some places. Meteorologists say that as soon as the western disturbance weakens, cold winds from the north will increase. This will increase the chill in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh. After January 3 and 4, these cold winds can reach Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, where cold wave conditions can occur.
