NCR’s air ‘poisonous’ even on the first day of the New Year, hope of relief from light rain, cold will increase

Noida, January 1. With the beginning of the new year 2026, people of the National Capital Region (NCR) have not been able to get respite from air pollution. On the very first day of the year, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi-NCR was recorded in the severe category. According to data from various monitoring stations of the Central and State Pollution Control Board, AQI was recorded between 300 to 420 in almost all areas of Delhi, which is considered very dangerous from health point of view.

Talking about major areas of Delhi, AQI was recorded at 418 in Anand Vihar, 413 in Rohini, 414 in Wazirpur, 421 in Sonia Vihar, 404 in Vivek Vihar and 391 in DTU. Whereas AQI is 392 in Ashok Vihar, 377 in Chandni Chowk, 370 in Bawana, R.K. It was 381 in Puram, 382 in Shadipur and 384 in Sirifort. Alipore recorded AQI 328 and Aya Nagar 327, while CRRI Mathura Road area recorded AQI 310. AQI was 391 in Punjabi Bagh and 366 in Pusa.

It is clear from these figures that there is hardly any area of ​​the capital where the air is breathable. The situation in other cities of NCR adjacent to Delhi is also no different. The AQI was 401 in Ghaziabad’s Loni area, 399 in Vasundhara, 274 in Indirapuram and 279 in Sanjay Nagar. AQI was recorded 393 in Sector-1 of Noida, 354 in Sector-125, 348 in Sector-62 and 363 in Sector-116. According to these data, a large part of NCR remains in the severe to very bad category.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted light rain on the first day of the new year i.e. January 1. According to the Meteorological Department, the sky will remain cloudy throughout the day and there may be very light to light rain in the morning and afternoon. The temperature is expected to be maximum 15 degrees and minimum 10 degrees Celsius. There is definitely hope that the rain will bring some relief to the pollution level.

However, the Meteorological Department has also warned that there is a possibility of dense fog in the morning on 2 and 3 January. On January 2, the maximum temperature will be 17 and minimum 10 degrees, while on January 3, the minimum temperature can fall to 8 degrees. This means that the cold will increase further in the coming days and life may be affected due to fog.
