Australia announces squad for T20 WC 2026, these 3 players will debut, Steve Smith out
T20 World Cup 2026: Australia has announced its provisional 15-member squad for the proposed ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026. This time it has been decided to hand over the command of the team to Mitchell Marsh. This team especially has shown a lot of trust in the spin bowlers.
Hobart Hurricanes’ explosive batsman Mitchell Owen did not get a place in the team this time, which is considered to be the biggest surprise of the selectors. This time no left-arm fast bowler has been included in the squad, which is a big change compared to the 2021 champion team.
Three players can make World Cup debut
Spinner Matthew Kuhneman, all-rounder Cooper Connolly and fast bowler Xavier Bartlett can represent Australia for the first time in the T20 World Cup. Especially the selection of Cooper Connolly was surprising, because he had not participated in the last 12 T20 International matches.
Pat Cummins returns
The team includes experienced all-rounders like Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green, who can play an important role on Indian pitches. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis are considered important in the bowling department. Pat Cummins is returning to the team after injury in the third match of the Ashes series, and his fitness is being monitored.
Australian selection committee chairman George Bailey said, ‘The T20 team has performed brilliantly in recent years, which has given us the freedom to choose a balanced team for conditions like India and Sri Lanka.’ He also said that the fitness of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David is being monitored, but it is expected that all of them will be available for the World Cup.
Australia competes in Group B
Australia is included in Group B, which has teams from Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Oman and Ireland. Australia’s first match will be against Ireland on 11 February at the R Premadasa Cricket Stadium. After this, Australia will play against Zimbabwe on 13 February, Sri Lanka on 16 February and Oman on 20 February.
