Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon flag off the country’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train. Railway Ministry Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Thursday announced that testing, testing and certification of the Vande Bharat sleeper train has been completed, and the first service will be started between Guwahati and Kolkata.
Vaishnav said, “There was a demand for new generation trains for a long time. Vande Bharat Chair Car has started a new era in Indian Railways. People have liked it very much and demand for Vande Bharat trains is coming from across the country.”
Vande Bharat Sleeper train is specially designed for long distance travel, which will provide fast, comfortable and modern travel experience to passengers traveling more than 1000 kilometres. This train will have advanced safety features, better suspension system and world-class sleeper coaches, which will make night travel even more convenient.
Cheapest rates on Guwahati-Kolkata route
The ticket price of Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Guwahati-Kolkata route has been fixed at around ₹2300. The minister said, “Generally the price of air travel on the Guwahati-Kolkata route ranges between ₹6000 to ₹8000 and sometimes it goes up to ₹10,000. In Vande Bharat Sleeper, the 3AC fare from Guwahati to Howrah has been fixed at around ₹2300, which is quite cheap for general passengers. Whereas, the 2AC fare will be around ₹3000 and the 1st AC fare will be Rs. It has been kept around ₹3600.”
12 Vande Bharat sleeper trains ready in 2026
Vaishnav said that by the end of this year, about 12 Vande Bharat sleeper trains will be ready and included in the rail network. After this, their number will be increased rapidly next year.
Successful high-speed trial
Indian Railways successfully completed high-speed trials of indigenously designed and manufactured Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. During this trial the train achieved a maximum speed of 180 kmph. This trial was conducted on the Kota-Nagda section and during this the performance of the train was found to be completely satisfactory.
The test carried out technical evaluation of the train’s ride stability, momentum, braking performance, emergency braking system, safety systems and other important parameters. This trial was declared successful by the Commissioner for Safety (CRS).

Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are equipped with modern amenities for passengers, including comfortable sleeper berths, advanced suspension systems, automatic doors, modern toilets, fire protection and surveillance systems, CCTV based security, digital passenger information system and energy efficient technologies.
