Sri Lanka has given a big responsibility to former fast bowler Lasith Malinga before next year’s T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Tuesday confirmed that Malinga has been included in the coaching staff and has been appointed as a fast bowling consultant.

Sports News: Sri Lanka has taken a big step amid preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026. The team has included its former legendary fast bowler Lasith Malinga in the coaching staff. Malinga has been appointed as the fast bowling consultant of the team and will serve in his role as a short-term consultant till January 25, 2026. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officially confirmed this appointment on Tuesday.

Malinga’s responsibility

The Sri Lankan team has intensified its preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026. The main objective of Malinga’s appointment is to make the team’s fast bowlers master the death overs and increase competitiveness on the global stage. Malinga has been adept at bowling death overs in his career and his strategy and experience can prove to be important for the team.

Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup campaign will begin on 8 February 2026 against Ireland in the group stage. They will face teams like Australia, Oman and Zimbabwe in the group stage. Under the coaching of Malinga, the team is expected to get strength in fast bowling.

Malinga’s international and coaching experience

Lasith Malinga played for the Sri Lankan national team from 2007 to 2014. He has been a part of many important wins for the team, including winning the T20 World Cup against India in Mirpur in 2014. Malinga’s bowling in the death overs and his special yorkers make him a legend in the cricket world. Malinga also has coaching experience. He has worked with franchises like Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. With this experience, they can teach players strategy, mental preparation and match-winning bowling techniques.

If we look at Sri Lanka’s previous achievements in the T20 World Cup, the team finished runners-up in the 2009 and 2012 editions, while in 2014 it won the title by defeating India in Mirpur. Since then, Sri Lanka has been struggling to repeat its past success. Malinga’s appointment is part of this effort to increase the team’s competitiveness and re-establish its identity on the world stage.
