Magh Mela, held every year at Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is considered to be the biggest confluence of faith, tradition and spiritual practice. Magh Mela 2026 Duration and Bathing Dates
In the year 2026, Magh Mela of Prayagraj will start from Paush Purnima i.e. 3rd January. With this, Kalpavas is also considered to be the beginning. This fair will end with the last bath on Mahashivratri on 15th February 2026. During this period, there will be many special bathing dates, which have the highest religious significance.
The fair and Kalpavas will start with Paush Purnima on 3 January 2026. There will be a bath of Makar Sankranti on 14th January, which is considered very auspicious. There will be a bath of Mauni Amavasya on 18th January and the holy bath of Vasant Panchami will take place on 23rd January. There will be a special bath of Maghi Purnima on 1st February, which is called the main bath of Kalpavasis. Finally the fair will conclude with the last bath on Mahashivratri on 15th February.

Religious significance of Magh Mela
According to mythological beliefs, four drops of nectar fell on the earth during the churning of the ocean. These four places are considered to be Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik and Prayagraj. Kumbh Mela is organized at these places. Every year Magh Mela in Prayagraj is associated with this tradition. It is believed that by taking bath in Sangam in the month of Magh, all the sins of a person are eliminated and the soul is purified.
What is Kalpavas?
The most special part of Magh Mela is Kalpvas. Kalpavasi live a simple life by living on the banks of Sangam throughout the month of Magh. People reside there in tents or huts and bathe in the Sangam daily. During this period, their life is based on restraint, penance and spiritual practice. Mantra chanting, bhajan-kirtan, satsang and discourse are part of their daily routine. The purpose of Kalpavas is to attain spiritual purification by staying away from worldly attachments.
Importance of Kalpvas in Magh month
In religious texts, Kalpvas of Magh month has been described as very virtuous. It is mentioned in the Mahabharata that by doing Kalpavas in the month of Magh, a person gets results equivalent to hundred years of rigorous penance. According to some beliefs, Lord Shiva got the power to kill Tripurasura from Kalpavas only. Kalpavas can be done for one day, three days, a whole month, several years or even for a lifetime. It is also said in the Puranas that the gods also wish to take birth in human form and spend their Kalpavas in Prayagraj.
In this way, Magh Mela is not only a religious event but also a confluence of faith, penance and spiritual practice, which attracts devotees every year.
