Stranger Things Spin-off Will Explain What Henry’s Mystery Rock From Season 5 Finale
As the dust settles on the Stranger Things Season 5 finale, creators Matt and Ross Duffer are already teasing a new spin-off. They recently offered exciting, albeit cryptic, details about the project while definitively shutting down one major fan theory about its setting.
What did the Duffer Brothers say about the Stranger Things spin-off?
Asked by Deadline whether the Stranger Things finale includes a hint about the spin-off, Ross Duffer acknowledged the curiosity but quickly corrected fan assumptions.“It’s not Hopper mentioning Montauk. There’s no Montauk spinoff.”
Ross explained that the reference was intentional but symbolic. “That was more of a wink to the fans, deep-cut fans that know that the show started as Montauk,” he said, stressing that it should not be read as an arc setup. He also ruled out familiar faces leading the new project, adding, “It’s obviously not Holly and the kids or anything like that.”
Instead, Ross described the Stranger Things spin-off as something far more contained. “It’s something much smaller than that,” he said. “It is early days, but it is an entirely new mythology.” While the project remains connected to the Stranger Things universe, Ross noted that it will exist on its own terms. “It’s got its own story and its own mythology.”
Matt Duffer echoed those comments to Varietyparticularly when they mentioned the mysterious rock seen in the finale. Matt admitted, “Spinoffy, yeah. You pinned us down.” He added that the upcoming series will explore that element directly. “The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it,” he said. Further adding, “It’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining.”
The brothers also confirmed that development is actively underway. “We’re going to start working on it again on Monday,” Ross said. So, as the Duffers have made clear, Stranger Things has closed the book on Hawkins, but a new spin-off, rooted in a different mythology, is already in the works.
