MTV’s historic end: Farewell to an era of music

Mumbai: An important chapter in the world of music and pop culture has ended. The famous music channel MTV said goodbye to its viewers on 31 December 2025. For more than four decades, MTV provided a fresh take on youth opinion, fashion, music and pop culture.

The news of MTV’s closure left music lovers around the world emotional. People on social media started remembering their old days, when watching music videos was part of their daily habits.

The rise of MTV

MTV was founded in 1981 as a music video network in America. At the time, this was a revolutionary step, as music videos were shown 24 hours a day on television for the first time. Gradually, the channel did not limit itself to just music, but became a major platform for reality shows, youth culture and entertainment programming. MTV not only brought fame to many international artists, but also changed the way music was presented visually.

Are all MTV channels shut down?

It is important to clarify that not all MTV channels have been shut down. In America, channels like MTV and MTV Classic will continue to entertain the audience in the new year also. However, MTV’s music-only channels have been discontinued entirely in the United Kingdom and several other countries. These include MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live. Also, the broadcasting of MTV’s music channels has been stopped in many countries like Australia, Poland, France, Brazil.

Emotional farewell with last song

MTV Music channel bid goodbye to the audience with a special and symbolic song in its final broadcast. The last song played on the channel was “Video Killed The Radio Star”. The choice of this song was significant in itself, as it was the song that defined MTV.

When this song went on air for the last time, it became an emotional moment for millions of viewers. People on social media called it the most emotional goodbye in music history.
