Mayawati’s sharp attack on deaths due to drinking polluted water in Indore, holds government responsible
Lucknow, 2 January. The news of deaths and many others falling seriously ill due to drinking polluted water in Indore, Madhya Pradesh has created outrage across the country. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president Mayawati reacted to this painful incident on Friday. He has described it as extremely sad, shocking and the result of government irresponsibility. Mayawati said in a post on the social media platform
He said, “Although it is the first responsibility of every government to provide clean air and water etc. to the people, but here, just like crime control and law and order, government negligence and corruption etc. in relation to basic public facilities are proving to be quite fatal and families are being destroyed, this is very sad and very worrisome. To prevent such shameful incidents of playing with the lives of citizens, the state government needs to keep taking the strictest steps.” Mayawati further said that the Central Government should also take proper cognizance of this and take effective action, so that such painful incidents do not happen in any other state of the country.
Let us tell you that in Bhagirathpura area of Indore, a case of 7 people died and more than 40 people fell ill due to drinking contaminated water. Considering this incident as a serious violation of human rights, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh and sought a detailed report within two weeks. There are varying claims regarding the number of deaths in this incident. Government figures state 4-7 deaths, while local residents and some reports claim as many as 10-13, including a 6-month-old innocent child. More than 100 people are admitted to various hospitals, where symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting and other waterborne diseases have been found.
