Care of heart in cold: What is the direct connection between severe cold and heart attack? – ..
News India Live, Digital Desk: Actually, when the temperature falls in winter, our body tries to save heat. According to Dr. Prateek Chaudhary, our blood vessels start shrinking in extreme cold. In medical language this is called ‘vasoconstriction’. When the tubes narrow, the heart has to work harder than before to pump blood around the body. outcome? Blood pressure (BP) starts increasing suddenly, due to which the risk of heart attack increases.
Why is layered security better?
Most of us wear a very big jacket when it is cold. But doctors advise that wearing three-four layers of light clothing (layered clothing) is much safer for the heart than a thick jacket. The science behind this is that air gets trapped between the layers of clothes, which naturally does not allow the body heat to go out. This keeps the body temperature stable and protects the heart from sudden shocks (temperature shock).
morning cold and caution
This winter of 2026 is particularly challenging, so the elderly and heart patients should take special care. Dr. Prateek Chaudhary says that people often go out for a walk in the dark early in the morning, which is the most risky. When the body is suddenly exposed to cold outside air, there is tremendous pressure on the heart.
Some small changes, big rescue:
- Keep head and hands and feet covered: Half of our body heat escapes through the head and palms, so be sure to wear a hat and socks.
- Do not make the room hot or cold suddenly: Avoid going from a room with a very hot heater to the extreme cold outside.
- Do light exercise indoors only: If you are a heart patient, instead of exercising in cold air, do yoga or walking on the stairs or in the living room of the house.
Winter is a time to enjoy, as long as we listen to our hearts. Remember, warm clothes not only protect us from cold, they are also the biggest protective shield of our heart.
