Major setback for Indian cricket as key batsman suffers rib fracture, ruled out for weeks

NEW DELHI: Young India batsman Sai Sudharsan is set to be sidelined for over a month after suffering a rib fracture during a recent Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh, a BCCI source confirmed on Friday.

Sudharsan, who is not currently part of India’s white-ball setup, sustained a fracture to the anterior cortex of his right seventh rib while completing a diving run in Tamil Nadu’s VHT fixture against Madhya Pradesh in Ahmedabad.

The 24-year-old is unlikely to recover in time for Tamil Nadu’s remaining Ranji Trophy matches, though a more realistic target is a return in time for the upcoming IPL season with Gujarat Titans.

Sources revealed that Sudharsan reported to the BCCI’s Center of Excellence in Bengaluru on December 29, where scans detected a slender, undisplaced fracture in the anterior cortex of the right seventh rib.

The injury occurred at the same spot where Sudharsan had taken a blow during a net session earlier in the tournament.

According to a COE report, “Sai is currently undertaking lower-body strength and conditioning work with adequate protection around the injured rib to aid the healing process, and he has responded positively to the program.”

“Upper-body training will be introduced once the acute symptoms subside over the next seven to 10 days, after which he will be gradually eased into a structured upper-body strength and conditioning routine,” the report added.

It is understood that injuries of this nature typically require six to eight weeks for complete recovery.

Sudharsan has also endured a challenging run in Test cricket recently, failing to make an impact in nine of his 11 innings.
