Jason Gillespie’s two-word reply when asked about taking up India coaching job
NEW DELHI: Former Australian fast bowler and ex Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie recently engaged with fans on social media, answering a range of questions that offered insight into his views on coaching and international cricket.
During the interaction, a Pakistan fan dragged India’s recent Test struggles into the conversation and suggested Gillespie should take over as India’s head coach.
The fan wrote, “Jason you need to coach India now because they are losing, not just losing but getting whitewashed at home twice. They need you seriously.”
Gillespie wasted no time in shutting down the suggestion. His reply was brief and emphatic — “No thanks.”

India have endured a difficult phase in Test cricket, with their once formidable home record taking a rare beating. They were whitewashed 3–0 by New Zealand before suffering another home series defeat, losing 2–0 to South Africa.
The back-to-back losses marked a significant slump for a side that had enjoyed years of dominance in home conditions and intensified scrutiny around the team’s red-ball setup.
Turbulent end to Gillespie’s Pakistan stint
Gillespie’s response also needs to be seen in the context of his own recent coaching experience. His nine-month tenure as Pakistan’s red-ball head coach ended abruptly amid serious issues with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
The former Australia great later revealed he felt “completely humiliated” after the PCB sacked senior assistant coach Tim Nielsen without informing him.
That decision proved to be the final blow, prompting Gillespie to refuse to travel for Pakistan’s tour of South Africa and eventually step down, bringing a chaotic chapter of his coaching career to a close.
