India will buy R-37 from Russia, Pakistan shocked, China stunned!
New Delhi. Important talks are going on between India and Russia regarding R-37 Very Long Range Air-to-Air missile for Su-30MKI fighter aircraft. This possible deal has created a stir in regional security equations.
Focus on preventing threats from long range
The experiences of Operation Sindoor made it clear that in modern warfare, the role of air resources like AWACS, air-tankers and stand-off strike platforms is extremely important. Keeping these high value targets in mind, the Indian Air Force now wants a missile system that can neutralize the enemy far beyond the range.
What is the power of R-37 missile?
The Russian-origin R-37 missile is counted among the world’s longest-range air-to-air missiles. Its range is said to be more than 200 kilometers. This missile has been specially designed to target enemy surveillance and support aircraft, due to which the enemy’s combat capability can be weakened in the initial stage itself.
Su-30MKI will become long-range air dominance fighter
According to the Russian side, a Su-30MKI fighter aircraft can be equipped with a maximum of 8 R-37 missiles. This will give the Indian Air Force unprecedented capability to provide air denial over large areas and to remotely intercept enemy air platforms. This capability could pose a strategic challenge, especially for Pakistan and other potential adversaries.
Initially consideration of purchase of 300 missiles
According to media reports, the Indian Air Force is considering direct purchase of about 300 R-37 missiles to meet immediate needs. After this, based on operational experience and cost analysis, a decision can be taken on the possibility of manufacturing in India.
