It is considered to be one of the largest Shivalingas in India. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is square and its roof was built without any pillars, which shows the wonderful architecture of that time. The construction of the temple remained incomplete, yet its grandeur still attracts people. The huge stones, unfinished pillars and boulders scattered around testify to the advanced construction technology of that era.

Mythological story related to the temple

According to historical belief, this temple was built by the great king Bhoj of the Parmar dynasty in the 11th century. It is said that Raja Bhoj was suffering from a serious disease. Scholars advised him to establish Shivalinga, after which he started the construction of this grand temple.

 

A legend also says that the temple was being constructed in a single night but due to some reason the work remained incomplete. In some stories, natural disaster or the death of Raja Bhoj is considered to be the reason for its remaining incomplete.
