According to information shared by FBI Charlotte on social media platform X, this attack was going to target innocent people and sharp weapons were to be used in it. The FBI has described this as the result of better coordination between agencies, due to which many lives could be saved.
FBI statement: ‘The accused was inspired by ISIS’
The FBI said in its official post that ‘The FBI and our law enforcement partners foiled a possible terrorist attack on New Year’s Eve in North Carolina. The accused was going to take action directly inspired by ISIS. It is clear from this statement of FBI that the accused was preparing for action not by any single thought but by being influenced by terrorist ideology.
Reaction of FBI Director Kash Patel
FBI Director Kash Patel also reacted on this matter on social media. He wrote, ‘Thank you to our wonderful partners for working together with us and undoubtedly saving many lives.’ Patel praised the role of law enforcement agencies and said that this operation has saved many innocent lives.
Was preparing for the attack for a year
US Attorney Russ Ferguson told in the press conference that the arrested accused had been planning the attack for almost a year. He said that this was not just an idea, but a fully prepared conspiracy. The accused has been identified as Christian Sturdivant. According to officials, he was planning to attack with knives and hammers. US Attorney Russ Ferguson said that ‘he was preparing for jihad and the lives of innocent people were going to be lost.’ This statement clearly shows the seriousness of this conspiracy.
Accused of supporting terrorist organization
Sturdivant has been accused of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. This is considered a serious crime under US law. According to the FBI affidavit, Sturdivant had been under the agency’s surveillance since January 2022, when he was a minor. Investigation has revealed that he had contact with an ISIS member present in Europe, who had instructed him to carry out the attack.
Black clothes, hammer and attack – instructions from ISIS
The FBI says that the accused was instructed to wear completely black clothes and attack with a hammer. This method has been adopted by ISIS before also. During the raid, FBI agents found a hand-written document from the accused’s house, titled ‘New Year’s Attack 2026’. This document allegedly contained a plan to stab 20 people and attack the police officers who reached the spot. Security agencies believe that if this conspiracy was not revealed on time, a major terrorist attack could have taken place during the New Year celebrations. At present the accused is in custody and further investigation of the case is going on.
