Supreme Court will settle more than 75 thousand cases in 2025, even America and Britain cannot imagine

The Supreme Court of India has registered a remarkable achievement in judicial history by disposing of more than 75,000 cases in the year 2025. This figure is considered extraordinary not only for India but also in the context of global judiciary. Other supreme courts of the world—whether America Be it or Britain, this level of judicial efficiency cannot even be imagined.

It is true that this number may not seem very large in proportion to the huge population of India, but when the ratio of population and number of judges is compared globally, this achievement of India becomes even more significant. The number of judges in India in proportion to the population is the lowest in the world, yet the disposal of cases on such a large scale shows the efficiency of the judiciary.

Mediation suggested as an effective solution

At the recently held national conference on ‘Exploring the Efficiency and Reach of Mediation’, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta expressed concern over the increasing caseload and stressed the need to adopt alternative solutions. He said that mediation can be an effective means of reducing pressure on the judicial system.

According to Tushar Mehta, mediation gives both the parties an opportunity to find a mutually agreed solution, thereby avoiding long and traditional court battles. Many senior lawmakers of the country are also supporting this idea and believe that mediation can reduce the burden of the judiciary to a great extent.

American and British Supreme Court behind

Facts show that while the Indian Supreme Court (Supreme Court Case Disposal) disposes of more than 75,000 cases in a year, the US Supreme Court hears only 70 to 80 cases out of thousands of cases filed every year. The situation of Britain’s Supreme Court is also no different.

In Britain, by 29 December 2025, a little more than 200 cases came before the Supreme Court, out of which only about 50 cases were adjudicated. In contrast, the Indian Supreme Court has delivered nearly 1,400 important judgments and disposed of thousands of cases.

Historic performance despite shortage of judges

India has only 21 judges per 10 lakh population, which is the lowest in the world. In comparison, in America there are about 150 judges working per 10 lakh population. The Law Commission, in its report of 1987, had recommended at least 50 judges per 10 lakh population, which is only one-third compared to America.

Talking about Supreme Court Case Disposal, currently the sanctioned number of judges there is 34, which was increased in the year 2019. If the population of the country is considered to be around 150 crores, then on an average there is only one judge in the Supreme Court for every 4.5 crore people. Despite this, the level at which the Supreme Court has disposed of the cases has become an example for the global judiciary.

Need to increase the number of judges

Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has also clearly said that the judiciary needs more judges. In his words, “We simply need more judges. We are in constant touch with the government to increase the number of judges at all levels.”

Overall, this performance of the Indian Supreme Court, despite limited resources and acute shortage of judges, is not only praiseworthy, but has also become a source of inspiration for the global justice system.
