Karnataka Congress government’s EVM survey: A survey conducted by the Congress government in Karnataka for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has revealed that electronic voting machines (EVMs) are widely trusted by the public. According to this survey, more than 83 percent citizens have expressed the opinion that EVMs are reliable. After this report, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has continuously raised questions on the reliability of EVMs, has come under BJP’s target.

After the report of this survey came out, the Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly criticized the Congress, especially Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly raised doubts about the election process and the reliability of EVMs, and the BJP has claimed that the Congress government’s own survey shows public trust in EVMs.

In a survey titled “Lok Sabha Election 2024 – An Indirect Survey Assessment of Citizens’ Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices”, 83.61 per cent respondents said that EVMs are reliable. Also, 69.39 percent of citizens agreed that EVMs give accurate results. So, 14.22 percent people have completely agreed with it. These findings have given a new twist to the ongoing political debate about EVMs, and the issue of trust in the electoral process is likely to once again be fueled by political recriminations.

Detailed survey findings on trust in EVMs; Feedback from 5,100 citizens

A survey conducted in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka has again revealed that citizens across the state have massive faith in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The survey was conducted across 102 assembly constituencies in Karnataka, and a total of 5,100 citizens from the administrative divisions of Bengaluru, Belagavi, Kalburgi and Mysore were polled. The survey was conducted on behalf of Karnataka Government by the Chief Electoral Officer V. It was implemented under the guidance of Ambukumar. This survey report is designed to study the knowledge, attitudes and experiences of citizens about the electoral process.

Confidence in EVMs segment wise

According to the survey, Kalburgi division shows the highest level of trust in EVMs. Here 83.24 percent of citizens expressed the opinion that EVMs are reliable, while 11.24 percent strongly agreed. In Mysore division, 70.67 percent of citizens have expressed confidence in EVMs, and 17.92 percent of citizens have strongly agreed. In Belagavi division, 63.90 percent of the citizens agreed, while 21.43 percent expressed a strong opinion that EVMs are reliable.

The level of trust in EVMs is also significant in the capital Bengaluru, where 63.67 percent of citizens agreed, while 9.28 percent strongly agreed. The findings of this survey have given a fresh impetus to the ongoing debate on the reliability of EVMs, and a picture of public confidence in the electoral process has emerged.

BJP’s response on EVMs: “Karnataka told the truth” — Rahul Gandhi slams him

The BJP has come down hard on the Congress, particularly its leader Rahul Gandhi, after a survey by the Karnataka government revealed public trust in EVMs. Rahul Gandhi has consistently accused the BJP and the Election Commission of allegedly tampering with EVMs and “stealing votes”, and the BJP has viewed the survey as an important basis.

Reacting to this survey, the leader of opposition in the BJP Karnataka Legislative Assembly R. Posting on social media platform X, Ashok said, “For the past few years Rahul Gandhi has been saying across the country that India’s democracy is under threat and that EVMs are unreliable. However, the people of Karnataka have told a completely different story today.” This statewide survey shows that citizens have strong faith in the electoral process, EVMs and the democratic system of India.

‘Doubt institutions in defeat, celebrate in victory’ — BJP alleges

The BJP has accused the Congress of imposing double standards. While the Congress party questions the Election Commission and other institutions while accepting defeat, it celebrates the same system after victory. “This is not politics of principles but politics of convenience,” the BJP alleged. These developments have once again intensified the ongoing political debate over the reliability of EVMs and the electoral process, and the issue is likely to gain more prominence in the wake of the upcoming elections.
