The mother covered her martyred son’s statue with a blanket : A mother is a mother. How will she keep her daughter cool in the bitter cold? How can this old mother sleep under warm blankets in the house when the boy is under the naked eye? She left the house and reached the statue of her martyred son at Rathana Mode (Gurnam Singh Chowk) in RSpura. Tears were flowing from his eyes and he had a blanket in his hand. The mother cradled the statue lovingly and covered it with a blanket. She said, currently all the people are sitting in their houses with heaters on, how will my son stand in the cold? I am a mother, how can the mind believe? This scene is not a memory, but proof that sacrifices never die.

Martyrdom in 2016
On October 22, 2016, a 24-year-old BSF constable Gurnam Singh was martyred while protecting the motherland while fighting terrorists at a security post at Bobia in Sabah sector. A statue of Gurnam was erected in this square to salute his bravery, as every mother does for her child, Gurnam’s mother Jaswant Kaur still takes care of him today. Jaswant Kaur Yani, who was standing near the statue on Friday, relived the old memories. She said that Gurnam was very cold since childhood and loved to wrap himself in blankets. He used to get the blanket out in October itself. Even when he was on duty, he used to ask for warm clothes and blankets from home.

Your tiger will not be afraid
Jaswant Kaur said that before his martyrdom, Gurnam had called home and said that he had killed the terrorists. When asked to take care of himself, he used to say, your tiger will not be afraid. He would often say, ‘If I become a martyr, erect a statue of me in the village square for the whole world to see.’
Today we have nothing to eat
Father Kulbir Singh was standing quietly looking at the statue. Both the father’s pride and the sorrow of a broken heart were evident in their silence. Mother Jaswant Kaur said that the square where the statue is is very small. Many a times the memorial gets bumped by the cars passing by, it breaks my heart. This square should be enlarged. Expressing his grief, father Kulbir said that when Gurnam was martyred, we were given many promises. My daughter got job by BSF, now she is married. But Jammu and Kashmir government did not give anything. Five lakh rupees was promised, which is still unfulfilled. We have no farm and nothing to eat.
