Addressing a gathering at the Somnath Swabhiman Parv function, PM Modi said, “I consider it my good fortune that being the chairman of the Somnath Temple Trust, I got the opportunity to actively participate in it.” He said, “When I am talking to you, this question arises again and again – exactly 1000 years ago, at this very place, what would the environment have been like? The people present here, your ancestors, our ancestors, they put their faith, their faith, their lives at stake for Mahadev – they sacrificed everything. A thousand years ago, the invaders thought they had defeated us, but even today, 1000 years later, in the Somnath Mahadev temple “Hoisting the flag shows India’s power and capabilities to the entire world.”

PM Modi said, “When Somnath Swabhiman Yatra is completing 1000 years, it also marks 75 years of its reconstruction in 1951… This festival is not about the destruction that happened 1000 years ago, but about this long journey. At every step, at every achievement, we see a unique similarity in India’s journey and Somnath. Just as many attempts were made to destroy Somnath, in the same way foreign invaders have destroyed our country. Constant efforts were made to destroy it, but neither Somnath nor India was destroyed.

He said, “In 1026, Ghazni was the first to attack the Somnath temple; he thought he had destroyed Somnath, but years later it was rebuilt. In the 12th century, Raja Kumarpal built a grand temple. In the 13th century, Alauddin Khilji attacked Somnath. In the early 14th century, the king of Junagadh rebuilt it. Later in the 14th century, Muzaffar Khan attacked Somnath but failed. In the 15th century, Sultan Ahmed Shah tried to convert it into a mosque, yet with the blessings of Mahadev, he tried to desecrate it, but Ahilyabai Holkar rebuilt and renovated the temple. It is about victory, reconstruction and the bravery and sacrifice of our ancestors, yet Somnath kept rising in every era.

Let us tell you that Somnath Swabhiman festival is being celebrated from 8 to 11 January in the famous Somnath Dham located on the beach of Veraval in Saurashtra region of Gujarat state. PM Narendra Modi has arrived to attend this function on Sunday. During this time he reached Shri Somnath Temple and offered prayers. During his visit, PM Modi paid floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who played a key role in the reconstruction of the Somnath temple. He paid floral tributes to brave Hamirji Gohil, who sacrificed his life while protecting the Somnath temple. Somnath Swabhiman Parv narrates the nearly 1000-year-old glorious story from the first invasion of Mahmud Ghaznavi to the repeated unsuccessful attempts to demolish the temple and the reconstruction of this holy place every time. Every year lakhs of devotees come to Somnath temple on this occasion.
