Good News! India’s rice exports increased by 19.4%
New Delhi. India has once again established its strong presence in the global food market. Last year, rice exports from India registered a growth of 19.4 percent, reaching almost a record level. Indian rice has become cheaper and more competitive in the international market after the government removed all restrictions on rice exports.
Prices in Asia at ten year low
Due to large-scale supply of rice from India, rice prices in Asian markets have reached their lowest level in almost ten years. Its biggest benefit has been to consumers in Africa and other poor countries, where food security has been strengthened due to cheaper rice.
According to government officials, rice shipments picked up after export restrictions were lifted in March. Due to record production in India, there was adequate availability in the domestic market, due to which the government completely lifted all the restrictions imposed in 2022 and 2023.
Which countries bought more rice
The highest demand for non-Basmati rice was from countries like Bangladesh, Benin, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Djibouti. At the same time, Iran, United Arab Emirates and Britain increased the purchase of premium Basmati rice. According to industry experts, India has regained its lost market share as Indian rice prices are lower than other countries.
What do export figures say?
According to the data, rice exports increased to 21.55 million metric tons in the year 2024, while it was 18.05 million metric tons in 2023. Earlier in 2022, India had exported a record of 22.3 million metric tons. Export of non-Basmati rice to increase by 25 percent to 15.15 million tonnes in the year 2025. At the same time, the export of Basmati rice was a record 6.4 million tonnes with an increase of 8 percent.
