According to the latest report of Pakistani media Dawn, the sensitive price index based short-term inflation rate in Pakistan has increased by 3.20% on an annual basis in the week ending January 8 due to increase in retail prices of wheat flour, sugar and rice, chicken and other items. SPI based inflation has been continuously increasing for the last 23 weeks. According to the official data released last Friday, it is increasing week by week.

Huge increase in food prices

The report said extraordinary rise in retail prices of everything from sugar to chicken has also played an important role in increasing inflation during the last few weeks. Compared to the previous week, the commodities whose prices recorded the highest increase include wheat flour (5.07%), chicken (2.86%), garlic (2.44%), chilli powder (1.01%), LPG price (0.88%), tea (0.73%), sugar (0.58%), bread (0.51%), basmati rice (0.41%) and firewood (0.25%).

Wheat price became costlier by 31.12%

Apart from this, according to Dawn, the commodities whose prices have increased the most in Pakistan on an annual basis include wheat flour (31.12%), gas price for the first quarter (29.85%), chilli powder (11.43%), sugar (11.18%), bananas and firewood (10.57%), jaggery (10.50%), powdered milk (9.51%) and eggs (8.03%) among others. It has been told that for the week ending January 8, compared to the previous week, the prices of about 21 essential and everyday items increased, while the prices of 22 items remained stable.
