Who stood in the way of Umar Khalid’s release? This sharp question of Owaisi exposed opposition unity

News India Live, Digital Desk: Whenever it comes to jail and bail in Indian politics, the debate often revolves around government versus opposition. But recently Asaduddin Owaisi has changed the direction of this entire discussion. Owaisi has directly cornered Congress over the prolonged imprisonment of faces like Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. He says that the foundation of the ‘stringent law’ that is being talked about today was actually laid during the Congress era. What is the issue? It is often seen that opposition parties accuse the government of misuse of investigating agencies and laws. But Owaisi has opened an old file. He clearly said that the credit goes to the UPA government for making the ‘Unlawful Activities Prevention Act’ i.e. UAPA so strict. Their logic is simple – if you yourself have made a strong chain, then why are you making noise today about the tightening of that chain? Why mention Omar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam? Omar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam have been in jail for a long time and their bail applications are repeatedly rejected. Owaisi believes that not only the existing system is responsible for the condition of these people, but also the law which was strengthened by Congress is responsible. Owaisi often alleges that when it comes to the rights of Muslims or activists, Congress changes its stand as per its convenience. Through this statement, Owaisi is not just talking about the law, but he is giving a message to the Muslim vote bank. He wants to show that both BJP and Congress are two sides of the same coin on his issues. When amendments were being made in UAPA, Congress had helped in getting it passed, and now the same law has become a challenge which is difficult to overcome. Conclusion: Is the law really the real villain? Experts believe that the law has its place and its interpretation has its place. But this comment of Owaisi has created a new rift within the India Alliance. On one hand, the opposition parties are preparing to fight the elections unitedly, while on the other hand, such statements show that old memories and decisions taken do not go away so easily. Now it remains to be seen how Congress responds to these allegations and whether the issue of these jailed activists will take on an even bigger political color in the future.
