Attention Persistent swelling in legs can be a sign of heart failure.

Swelling in legs (Edema) is often considered a minor problem by people. It is common to have slight swelling in the legs after standing or sitting for a long time. But experts say persistent or sudden swelling can sometimes be a sign of heart disease or other serious health problems.

Why do feet swell?
There can be many reasons for swelling in feet. Generally this is caused by water and salt imbalance, standing for long periods of time, pregnancy or being overweight. But if swelling persists or increases suddenly, ignoring it can be dangerous.

Experts say that swelling in feet and ankles can be a common symptom of heart disease, especially heart failure. When the heart is unable to pump blood properly, blood and fluids begin to accumulate in the lower parts of the body. As a result, problems like swelling in legs, fatigue and difficulty in breathing can be seen.

When to be careful:

If the swelling is accompanied by shortness of breath, fatigue, or changes in heart rate.

Swelling of the legs increases suddenly or abnormally.

Swelling may appear unevenly in one or both legs.

Apart from this, swelling of feet can also be a warning sign of problems like kidney, liver or thyroid. Therefore, it is not right to ignore it merely on the basis of aesthetics or inconvenience.

Ways to avoid leg swelling:

Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time.

Keep your legs elevated from time to time.

Control salt intake.

Do regular light exercise, such as walking or stretching.

Drink enough water, so that fluid balance is maintained in the body.

If swelling persists, a cardiologist or physician should be contacted immediately. The doctor may do tests like blood tests, ECG and echocardiography to find out the cause of swelling in the legs.
