Record breaking cold in Delhi after 13 years, mercury below zero in Rajasthan; Effect of Chilla-e-Kalan in Kashmir
These days the severe cold in North India has completely chilled the people. The severity of winter is such that in many places the temperature has dropped very low, and in the morning there is dense fog which makes visibility difficult. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that this severe cold is going to continue for the next few days. Come, how will be the weather in different states today i.e. on 12 January 2026. Delhi is experiencing the severest cold of this year. For the first time this season, the minimum temperature has fallen to 2.9 degrees Celsius (especially in Ayanagar area). Palam Airport also recorded such a low temperature of 3.0 degrees after 13 years.
The minimum temperature at Safdarjung Observatory (which is the main meteorological center of Delhi) was 4.8 degrees, which is about 2-3 degrees less than normal. The maximum temperature during the day can be around 18-19 degrees, but it will be very cold in the morning and evening. There will be dense fog in the morning, due to which visibility may be very low and one will have to be careful while driving. IMD has issued a yellow alert and such severe cold is likely to continue for the next 2 days. While going out, definitely wear warm clothes, muffler, gloves and cap, because the cold in the air is very strong.
Rajasthan
Cold continues to wreak havoc in Rajasthan too. The temperature has gone below zero in many areas. For example, minimum temperature was recorded at -2 degree in Pratapgarh, -1 degree in Barmer, 1.2 degree in Pilani, 1.7 degree in Sikar, and 2 degree in Churu-Jhunjhunu. At most places the minimum temperature remained well below 10 degrees. The morning temperature in the capital Jaipur may remain around 8-9 degrees, and will reach a maximum of 19-20 degrees during the day. But the cold will be felt very strong. The Meteorological Department has predicted a severe cold wave even today, especially in the eastern and northern parts. Dense fog and cold winds may blow in the morning.
Punjab and Haryana
Cold has broken the back of Punjab and Haryana also. Bathinda was the coldest in Punjab where the minimum temperature was recorded at 1.6 degrees. It was around 2.9 degrees in Faridkot, 3.2 degrees in Amritsar. Hisar was the coldest in Haryana (2.2 degrees). Even today, severe cold will remain in both the states. There will be dense fog in the morning due to which visibility may be very low and there may be problems in traffic. The minimum temperature is expected to be between 2-5 degrees. There will be sunshine during the day but the heat will be less.
Jammu and Kashmir
The cold is most terrible in Jammu and Kashmir. The temperature here is several degrees below zero. The minimum temperature in Srinagar was around -5.2 degrees to -6 degrees. It fell to -8.6 degrees in Shopian in South Kashmir and -7.6 degrees in Pahalgam. Due to this, some parts of Dal Lake and other water sources have frozen. Currently, a period of Chilla-e-Kalan (the most terrible winter of 40 days) is going on here. Due to clear sky the cold increases at night. Similar situation will prevail today also, and the possibility of snowfall is also less but the cold will be very severe.
