WPL 2026: Sophie Devine’s performance created a storm in the field, Gujarat Giants defeated Delhi Capitals by 4 runs.
Navi Mumbai: Opener Sophie Devine, after scoring a stormy half-century, bowled brilliantly in the last over to give Gujarat Giants a thrilling four-run win over Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League here on Sunday. This is Gujarat’s second win in two matches while Delhi had to face its second defeat in two matches.
Chasing Gujarat’s target of 210 runs, Delhi Capitals team could only score 205 runs for five wickets despite half-centuries from openers Lizelle Lee (86 runs, 54 balls, 12 fours, three sixes) and Laura Wolwart (77 runs, 38 balls, nine fours, three sixes) and a 90-run partnership for the second wicket between the two.
Delhi needed only seven runs to win in the last over with seven wickets remaining but Devine gave his team victory by dismissing Wolwart and captain Jemimah Rodrigues (15). For Gujarat Giants, Divine took 21 wickets while Rajeshwari Gaikwad took two wickets each for 34 runs.
Gujarat Giants scored 209 runs with the innings of opener Divine (95 runs, 42 balls, eight sixes, seven fours) and captain Ashleigh Gardner (49 runs, 26 balls, three sixes, four fours). Devine also made a partnership of 94 runs for the first wicket with Beth Mooney (19). Nandini Sharma was the most successful bowler from Delhi, who took five wickets for 33 runs while playing her third WPL match. He wrapped up Gujarat’s innings by taking four wickets including a hat-trick in the last over of the innings. Sri Charani and Chinelle Henry took two wickets each but conceded 42 and 43 runs respectively in their four overs.
Renuka Singh took the catch of Liezel on the very second ball of her innings, who took full advantage of it. He hit a four and a six on Renuka and then in the next over he also hit two fours on Keshavi. Shefali Verma (14) also hit fours on Divine and Keshavi but Rajeshwari Gaikwad bowled them.
Delhi Capitals scored 47 runs for one wicket in the power play. Lizel completed her half-century in 33 balls with two fours and a six on consecutive balls of Georgia Wareham in the eighth over. He also hit two fours on Divine. Delhi’s century of runs was completed in the 12th over. Lizel attempted to increase the run rate with sixes and fours off consecutive balls from Wareham. She hit a four off Keshavi in the next over but then got caught by Divine on the ball of the same fast bowler. Delhi needed 77 runs to win in the last five overs. Wolwart and Henry (07) hit sixes on Rajeshwari but Henry was caught by Gardner in the same over.
Captain Jemimah Rodrigues opened her account with a four off Rajeshwari. Wolwart hit two fours on Tanuja Kanwar and then changed the course of the match by scoring 19 runs off Gardner in the 18th over with three fours and a six. During this period he completed his half-century in 29 balls.
Delhi needed 29 runs in the last two overs. Wolwart and Jemima scored 22 runs in the next over of Keshavi, leaving Delhi needing seven runs in the last over. However, Devine ensured Gujarat’s victory by dismissing Jemimah and Wolwart in the final over. Earlier, Delhi captain Jemimah Rodrigues won the toss and decided to bowl first, after which Divine gave the team a stormy start. Mooney hit a four on the first ball of the match from Marijne Kapp while Divine hit two fours on Henry. Divine welcomed Nandini with two consecutive fours and a six. He added 32 runs in the sixth over off Sneh Rana with two consecutive fours and four sixes, making it the most expensive over in the history of WPL. During this period, Divine completed his half-century in 25 balls and in the power play, the team’s score reached 80 runs without losing any wicket.
Shri Charani gave the first blow to Gujarat Giants by catching Mooney on his own ball in the ninth over but Divine completed the team’s century with three sixes in the same over. Georgia Wareham also became the victim of Charni after scoring just three runs.
Anushka Sharma (13) hit a four and a six on consecutive balls of Shefali Verma but was caught by Nandini on the next ball. Bharti Fulmali (03) got a lease of life on the ball of Meenu Mani but in the next over, she was caught by Laura Wolwart on the ball of Henry. Ashleigh Gardner meanwhile hit sixes on Meenu and Charani. She also hit a six on Henry but was caught by Wolvaardt on the same fast bowler’s ball. Nandini completed the hat-trick by dismissing Keshav Gautam (14) on the second ball of the last over and then sending Kanika Ahuja (04), Rajeshwari Gaikwad (00) and Renuka Singh (00) to the pavilion on the last three balls.
