Cm Sarma Said That Sivasagar Is An Attempt To Create Miya Land

In Assam politics, on Sunday (January 11), former president of All Assam Minorities Students Union (AAMSU), Rezaul Karim Sarkar, created a controversy due to an objectionable statement he made from the stage as soon as he joined Congress. On January 11 (Sunday), in a program organized at Manabendra Sharma Complex in Guwahati, Rezaul, while taking membership of the party in the presence of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi, said that he will make Sivasagar ‘like Dhubri’, due to which CM Sarma took aim at him and said that this is a conspiracy to create Miyan Land.

“We will make Sivasagar like Dhubri, make Dhubri like Sivasagar, make Barak (district of south Assam) like Sivasagar and convert Tinsukia into Dhubri. We are going to make such Assam under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi,” Rezaul Karim Sarkar said at the event organized at Manbendra Sharma Complex. This statement evoked sharp reactions at the venue and in political circles. Gaurav Gogoi defended this statement by linking it to the concept of ‘Bor Assam’ (Greater Assam).

However, on this issue, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly attacked Congress and especially Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi. Sarma said that Sivasagar is part of Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, yet Gogoi remained silent instead of raising his voice against the statement of his new party member. The Chief Minister called it a serious and dangerous sign.

CM Sarma alleged that this statement reflects the intention of Congress to settle Bangladeshi infiltrators in areas like Sivasagar and Tinsukia and turn them into “Miya Land”. He claimed that if Congress returns to power, Miyan Muslims of Bangladeshi origin will loot Assam.

The Chief Minister said, “Today in a joining program of the Congress, he said that he will convert Sivasagar and Tinsukia into Dhubri. Once upon a time, Koch Rajbongshi and other tribes lived in Dhubri, but the infiltration of Bangladeshi people has made Dhubri a district where today 80 or 85 percent people are of Bangladeshi origin. Hindus have become a minority there.”
He also added in strong words, “If someone had made such a statement in front of me, I would have pushed him out.”

Raiser party chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi also reacted sharply on this controversy. He said that any deliberate attempt to incite social or political tension will be strongly and decisively opposed.

The entry of Rezaul Karim Sarkar into Congress and his statement have once again brought the already sensitive issues related to demographics, identity and infiltration in Assam to the center stage. The case has further intensified the political conflict, with Congress and BJP coming face to face.
