Budget 2026: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the 9th budget on February 1, for the first time the general budget will be presented on Sunday.
New Delhi. For the first time in the parliamentary history of the country, the Central Budget will be presented on Sunday. The general budget for the financial year 2025-26 will be presented on Sunday this time. Making a formal announcement on Monday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget in Parliament on Sunday, February 1. Generally, Parliament proceedings do not take place on weekends, so presentation of the budget on Sunday will be a historic moment.

This budget will also be a big personal achievement for Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. This will be his ninth consecutive budget. With this, she will come very close to the record of presenting the highest budget set by the country’s former Finance Minister Morarji Desai. Former PM Morarji Desai had presented a total of 10 budgets during his tenure as finance minister, and Nirmala Sitharaman is now just one step away from that historic figure.
What will happen during the budget session starting from January 28?
The complete schedule of the budget session of Parliament has also been made clear. The session will start on January 28.
President’s Address: The session will begin with the address of President Draupadi Murmu. She will address the joint meeting of members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the Lok Sabha chamber.

What will happen between 13 February and 9 March?
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had already clarified that the budget session will start from January 28 and continue till April 2. To ensure close scrutiny of parliamentary procedures and budget proposals, the session has been divided into two phases-
First Step: Starting from January 28th, it will continue till February 13th.
Holiday: The session will be adjourned after 13 February and will resume on 9 March. This interval will be used by parliamentary committees to examine the demands for grants and budget proposals of various ministries.

Second step: It is expected to start from March 9 and run till April 2.
February 1 has been officially designated as ‘Budget Day’ by the government.
