According to the latest update, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has confirmed that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the general budget for the financial year 2026-27 on 1 February 2026 (Sunday) itself. Normally, Parliament proceedings are not held on Sundays, but considering the constitutional importance of the budget, it is being held this weekend. But the doors of Parliament will still remain open.
The budget has already been presented on Sunday
This is not the first time that the budget is being presented on Sunday. Earlier in the year 1999, the then Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha had also presented the budget on Sunday. The budget session of Parliament will be held in two phases. According to inside news, its possible blueprint is as follows.
- January 28: The session begins with the address of President Draupadi Murmu.
- 29-30 January: Economic Survey may be presented.
- 01 February: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her 9th consecutive budget at 11 am.
Let us tell you that the first phase of the budget session will continue till 13 February. At the same time, the second phase will start from the second week of March (likely March 9) and will continue till the first week of April.
Why was there a delay? Speculation of?
There was discussion among market experts and political analysts that since it was Sunday, the government could postpone the budget to February 2 (Monday). There were two main arguments behind this:
1. Stock Market Holiday: The stock market remains closed on Sunday. Market reaction matters a lot on the budget day, hence there were speculations that the budget will be brought on a working day of the market.
2. Logistics: There was also doubt regarding the holidays of official machinery and employees on Sunday.
However, the Modi government has decided to maintain the tradition of presenting the budget on February 1 since 2017 so that the plans for the new financial year can be implemented on time from April 1.
