Election Day Silences the Stands at WPL Game in Navi Mumbai

The Women’s Premier League game played between Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz (WPL 2026) will be played behind closed doors due to the Navi Mumbai municipal corporation elections scheduled for January 15.

The police informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that they would be unable to provide adequate security during the WPL games on election day.

The WPL 2026 schedule was released on November 29, while the election date was made public on December 15. It is understood that the WPL committee was updated soon after the election date was decided.

The matches between Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz, Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz on January 14 and 15 will have no spectators.

Meanwhile, the fans’ allowed for the match between Gujarat Giants vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru on January 16 remains uncertain.

“We may have to host those two matches (on January 14 and 15) without any crowd. We are contemplating that idea after the police intimation, but as of now, no decision has been taken,” said BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

The first phase of WPL season 4 is being held at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, while the second phase and the final will be played in Vadodara.

The official WPL online ticket platform has not listed tickets for sale for matches on January 14, 15 and 16.

However, tickets for the double header on January 17, when MI  will take on UPW, while DC will play RCB, before the tournament moves to Vadodara.

Most women’s international cricketers refer to the DY Patil Stadium as the unofficial home of the Indian team, which was only solidified when they won the 2025 World Cup semifinal and final in front of record crowds.
