Food producer Halong Canfoco shuts down factory amid probe of pork infected with African swine fever

Halong Canfoco has shut down one of its three food processing plants for 14 days after authorities found 130 tons of diseased pork there.

The shutdown of the factory in Hai Phong City on Monday would last longer if necessary, the company said in a statement Sunday.

It also assigned deputy CEO Cao Nhat Huy with managing the factory and handle staff arrangement there after CEO Truong Sy Toan was arrested by the Hai Phong police on Saturday for questioning about the possession of pork infected with African swine fever by the company.

The police also took in three employees from the company’s quality management department who were responsible for inspecting purchases.

The police said the company had already used the contaminated meat to make more than 1.7 metric tons of pate, equivalent to around 14,000 cans.

Authorities said the diseased meat was sourced from suppliers in Hung Yen Province near Hai Phong and lacked proper documentation.

Supermarkets in Hanoi and HCMC began removing Halong Canfoco products from their shelves last week, also including canned tuna and canned fruits.

The Hai Phong plant is the company’s main production hub, and it has two more in Da Nang City and Dong Thap Province.

Halong Canfoco was established in 1957 and is among the country’s leading foodstuff producers with sales of VND682 billion (US$25.97 million) in 2024.
