19 year old princess will become the queen of this country, 150 years of history will change; Know here who is Leonor?
Future Queen Of Spain: For the first time in 150 years, a 19-year-old girl is going to become the queen of Spain. Spain’s Princess Leonor, daughter of King Felipe and Queen Letizia, is set to become the first queen of a European country since her great-great-grandmother, Isabella II, who reigned in the 1800s.
History of the Spanish Royal Family
The history of the Spanish royal family is quite interesting. The Bourbon family has been in possession of the Spanish throne since the beginning of the 18th century. Their claim was confirmed after the War of the Spanish Succession, when the Bourbons defeated their rivals the Habsburgs and captured the crown.
In 1975, after nearly 40 years of Franco’s dictatorship, King Juan Carlos I restored the monarchy and led Spain toward democracy. He abdicated the throne in June 2014 in favor of his son Felipe, who became king at the age of 46. Felipe married former journalist Letizia in 2004, and she became queen at the age of 42.
They have two daughters, Leonor, Princess of Asturias and heir apparent to the throne, born in 2005, and Infanta Sofia, 18, born in 2007.
What does Spanish law say?
Now, by law, the current King or Queen of Spain has to undergo training with the Army, Navy and Air Force as part of their education before assuming the throne.
Princess Leonor started preparations
Leonor, who began her higher education by completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma at UWC Atlantic College in Wales, has begun her military training as the future Commander-in-Chief of Spain.

She began army training in Zaragoza in August 2023, joining the class of 560 cadets, and in 2024, she went to Naval training in Galicia, then spent 140 days at sea on the ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, where she served as a crew member. In this journey of 17,000 miles she went across the Atlantic Ocean, around South America and as far as New York.
After a brief assignment on the battleship Blas de Lezo, she rejoined Elcano in July for her final return to Cadiz. Leonor, who was welcomed during her military training at the Air Force and Space Academy in San Javier, Murcia, is going to receive an institutional honor from Murcia in the coming months – the Gold Medal of the Region of Murcia.
