10 fishermen from Rameshwaram detained by Sri Lankan Navy – ..
Chennai, January 13: Sri Lankan Navy has detained 10 fishermen from Rameshwaram. During this time a fishing boat was caught. There are frequent incidents of fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry being arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of cross-border fishing and their boats being confiscated and declared as government property. The livelihood of fishermen is being seriously affected by this.
In the same sequence, 10 fishermen from Rameshwaram have been detained on charges of cross-border fishing in Neduntheevu area. It is being told that the fishermen will be produced before the Jaffna Fisheries Department officials.
The arrest of the fishermen has sparked outrage among their families and the fishing community. Allegations have been made that the Sri Lankan Navy has acted in a trespassing manner, and demands are being made for the immediate release of the fishermen.
The Sri Lankan Navy is interrogating the arrested fishermen. Fishermen have demanded the Central and State Governments to take concrete steps to stop such incidents.
