From business to market value; Who is bigger between Swiggy and Zomato?

Ordering food at home has now become expensive. This is because Swiggy and Zomato, from which you order food, have increased the platform fees. Now, for ordering food from Swiggy, you will have to pay a platform fee of Rs 15 and Rs 12 on Zomato. Earlier the fee was Rs 12 on Swiggy and Rs 10 on Zomato.
 
When Swiggy and Zomato entered the market in 2023, the platform fee on both was Rs 2. Since then, in two and a half years, the platform fees of both have increased to Rs 12 and Rs 15.

How did platform fees increase?

Swiggy is charging platform fees from April 2023 and Zomato from August 2023. At that time, platform fee of Rs 2 was charged on both. This is a kind of service charge, which the company uses to run itself and reduce losses.
 
In January 2024, Zomato increased its platform fees to Rs 4. It was reduced to Rs 10 in October last year. This week, Zomato has increased the platform fee to Rs 12.
 
Similarly, Swiggy’s platform fees have also increased three times in a year. In May last year, Swiggy had increased the platform fee to Rs 5. It was increased to Rs 6 in June and then to Rs 10 in October. Last month itself, on August 14, Swiggy had increased the platform fee from Rs 10 to Rs 14. Now again it has been increased to Rs 15. However, this fee has been increased only at some selected places.

But why was this done?

Considering the demand and losses during the festive season, companies have increased the platform fees. Swiggy is running in huge losses, while Zomato has been in profit for two years.
 
According to the financial report of Swiggy, the company had received a revenue of Rs 15,623 crore in 2024-25. However, the company’s expenses far exceeded its earnings. Swiggy had spent Rs 18,725 crore in 2024-25. Accordingly, it had a total loss of Rs 3,117 crore.
 
It has also suffered huge losses in the first quarter of 2025-26 i.e. between April and June. Swiggy has suffered a loss of Rs 1,197 crore in the first quarter. This is 96 percent more than the loss in the first quarter of 2024-25. Swiggy had a loss of Rs 611 crore in the first quarter of 2024-25.
 
At the same time, Zomato has made a profit of Rs 527 crore in 2024-25. This is 50% more than in 2023-24. Zomato had a profit of Rs 351 crore in 2023-24. Zomato’s revenue in 2024-25 was Rs 21,320 crore. At the same time, its expenditure was Rs 20,623 crore. After paying all expenses and taxes, the company made a profit of Rs 527 crore.
 
Zomata’s profit has declined slightly in the first quarter of this year. Zomato’s revenue increased by 70% year-on-year to Rs 7,167 crore in the first quarter of 2025-26. Zomato’s total revenue in the first quarter of 2024-25 was Rs 4,206 crore. However, despite this, the company’s profit has reduced significantly. Zomata’s profit in the first quarter was only Rs 25 crore, whereas in the first quarter last year the company had made a profit of Rs 236 crore.

How big are Swiggy and Zomato?

Both Swiggy and Zomato are big companies in the food delivery sector. According to the report of Motilal Oswal, today the market share of Swiggy is 42 to 45% and that of Zomato is 55 to 58%.
 
Both the companies are also in quick commerce. Swiggy has Instamart and Zomato has Blinkit. Instamart and Blinkit deliver within 10 minutes. Both the companies are investing heavily in their Quick Commerce platform. This is also one of the reasons for Swiggy’s loss and Zomato’s profit decline.
 
Zomato 2015, Zomato was started in 2014. Today Zomato is in more than 800 cities. Zomato is associated with more than 3 lakh restaurants. It has more than 5 lakh delivery partners. At the same time, Swiggy has its reach in more than 600 cities and 2.80 lakh restaurants are associated with it. Today the market value of Swiggy is Rs 1 lakh crore and that of Zomato is Rs 3 lakh crore.

How much will you earn by increasing platform fees?

Swiggy earns more from platform fees than Mateo. In the first quarter of 2025-26, Zomato earned Rs 89 crore and Swiggy earned Rs 109 crore from platform fees.
 
Now both have increased the platform fees. Swiggy delivers around 20 lakh orders and Zomato 23 to 25 lakh orders every day. It is estimated that due to increase in platform fees, Swiggy will earn Rs 3 crore more every day. Zomato’s earnings are also expected to increase by the same amount.
 
By increasing the platform fees, on one hand the earnings of the companies will increase and on the other hand, ordering food will become a bit expensive for the people. Now you will have to pay Rs 15 for food orders through Swiggy and Rs 12 on Zomato.
