Ja Morant could return on Thursday

Memphis could soon have Ja Morant back on the court, with head coach Tuomas Iisalo saying there’s a chance the star guard returns as early as Thursday against the Orlando Magic in Berlin.

Morant has missed five games with a right calf bruise, a stretch that overlapped with reports that the Grizzlies are listening to trade offers ahead of the February 5 deadline.

Iisalo confirmed the point guard practiced Tuesday and remains in play for either the Berlin matchup or Sunday’s game in London.

“He’s been involved and making progress,” the coach said, while declining to address trade speculation directly.

Morant hasn’t spoken publicly since reports surfaced but has traveled with the team and participated in workouts.

Teammate Jaren Jackson Jr. dismissed the rumors, saying, “He’s here, he’s practicing, and that’s really all that matters.”

Both games against Orlando will air on Prime Video, adding attention due to league rules around national broadcasts.

Thursday’s contest also marks the first time Desmond Bane will face Memphis since being traded to the Magic last offseason.

“Ja just wants to play and feel appreciated,” Bane said. “That’s what every player is looking for.”

Morant is averaging 19.0 points and 7.6 assists this season and is expected to address reporters Wednesday in Berlin.
