Makar Sankranti 2026: 14 or 15 January? Know the exact date and rules
Makar Sankranti 2026 Date : There is confusion among people regarding the date of Makar Sankranti. Some people are celebrating it on 14th January i.e. today, and some on 15th January. There is no consensus even among astrologers in this matter, due to which a dilemma has arisen among the common people also. However, now this confusion can be removed. Swami Brahmashram Maharaj, honored with the title of ‘Jagadguru’ by Niranjani Akhara, has clarified the exact date of Makar Sankranti.
According to Swami Brahmashram Maharaj, President of All India Dandi Sanyasi Parishad, Shattila Ekadashi is on 14th January. There is a tradition of eating rice khichdi and donating it on Makar Sankranti, but rice is prohibited on the day of Ekadashi. Rice is free only in Jagannath Puri, where Mahaprasad made of rice is offered to the Lord. Elsewhere it is considered faulty.
It is appropriate to celebrate Makar Sankranti on 15th January.
According to Swami Brahmashram Maharaj, January 15 is Dwadashi Tithi and the Sun is entering Capricorn. Therefore it is appropriate to celebrate Makar Sankranti on this day. On this day, you can donate and offer Khichdi and also do Ekadashi Parayan with rice in the morning. Apart from this, donating rice, sesame seeds, woolen clothes or blankets gives good results.
Swami Brahmashram Maharaj also told the auspicious time of bathing on Makar Sankranti. According to him, one can take bath in the holy rivers any time from 4 am to 3 pm on January 15.
Makar Sankranti on 15th January for next 54 years
Earlier, Varanasi’s storyteller and astrologer Krishna Shastri had also confirmed celebrating Makar Sankranti on January 15. According to him, on this day there will be a coincidence of Vriddhi Yoga, Shukla Dwadashi and Jyestha Nakshatra. Krishna Shastri said that for the next 54 years i.e. till 2080, Makar Sankranti will fall on 15th January only. After 2080, the date of Sankranti will change to 16 January.
