Trump’s stormy start: occupation of Venezuela, threat to Greenland and attack on Fed, supporters also got upset due to his aggressive attitude in the second term
New York: America’s President Donald Trump has surprised everyone with his attitude in the first two weeks of the year. On one hand he has started asserting his control over Venezuela and on the other hand he has also threatened to occupy Greenland. Apart from this, he is also taking strict steps against immigrants. He also wants to run the Federal Reserve, which is considered very important for the country’s economy, in his own way, and his conflict with its chief has also come to light. The way Trump is creating panic by taking big decisions one after the other is very shocking.
Meanwhile, voters are going to give their verdict on his leadership in the upcoming mid-term elections. There are big risks in every decision of Trump. Be it the threat of entering a war abroad or the fear of damage to the country’s financial system. But Trump is moving forward with complete aggression, due to which even some of his Republican Party allies are nervous.
Yale University professor and historian Joan B. “The office of the President has gone out of control. We’ve never seen anything like this before,” Freeman says. Trump is not caring about possible opposition or difficulties. “I’m feeling pretty good right now,” Trump said in Detroit on Tuesday. His speech mainly focused on the economy and he claimed that the economy was growing rapidly despite concerns about inflation. But he also did not forget to target Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell, who did not reduce interest rates despite pressure from Trump.
“This jerk will be out of business soon,” Trump said. Republican leaders supported Trump for most of his second term. But signs of cracks began to appear this week when Powell said Sunday that the central bank is facing a criminal investigation over his comments about renovating the Federal Reserve building. Last year too, the Justice Department had started investigating several cases against Trump, targeting his opponents, including the investigation against former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James and former National Security Advisor John Bolton. But taking action against Powell, who helps decide the country’s monetary policy, is crossing the line for some leaders. Maria Bartiromo, a staunch Trump supporter and Fox Business host, was unusually critical.
“It seems like the majority of Wall Street doesn’t want to see this kind of fight. The president has very good arguments, that’s right. But Wall Street doesn’t want to see this kind of investigation,” he said on Monday’s show.
The Federal Reserve plays a vital role in the economy because it sets interest rates, which Trump wants to lower. However, reducing the independence of this institution could be counterproductive. Trump is now making changes in America’s foreign policy. He talked about “America First”, but now he has expanded America’s role to countries where the situation is already very complex. The biggest step in this direction was taken in Venezuela. This month, the US launched a major military operation against Venezuela and tried to remove its President Nicolas Maduro from power. Before this attack, Trump kept saying that he was targeting Maduro because he is involved in drug trafficking. But now Trump has started presenting it as an economic opportunity for America, especially regarding oil.
Trump has said that America will now control the sale of Venezuelan oil to some extent. He also claimed that the South American country (Venezuela) would be run from Washington. Trump also posted a meme in which he described himself as the “Acting President of Venezuela.” Trump has also threatened the governments of Cuba and Iran, and said the US will control Greenland “at any cost”. This stance is raising questions on America’s relations with European allies. Greenland is part of Denmark, which is a member of NATO.
Trump’s harsh campaign against immigration has led to confrontations in many American cities. In some cases these conflicts have also proved fatal. In a related incident, a federal agent in Minneapolis shot 37-year-old Renee Good, a mother of three children, killing her. Administration officials say the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (IEC) officer was acting in self-defense. He said Good had tried to hit the officer with his car.
