Youth arrested for sending message to 50 lakh people for pro-monarchy protest
Kathmandu. Police have arrested a man accused of sending an unauthorized mass message to five million people calling on them to join a pro-monarchy protest.
According to SP Kazi Kumar Acharya, the team of Kathmandu Crime Investigation Office arrested Chitwan resident Nirdesh Sedhain from Hatisar area on Tuesday night. Sedhain, 34, who is in the auto business, had sent 50 lakh SMS through ‘AT Alert’ system using Nepal Telecom’s gateway.
According to SP Acharya, Sedhain himself has admitted to sending messages to 50 lakh people. SP Acharya said that he will be investigated under the crime against public interest on the charge of instigation.
Nepal Telecom also said in a statement today that it allows SMS transmission only for trade-business promotion purposes. A few days ago, Nepal Telecom was being criticized alleging breach of privacy when unauthorized messages were received for personal demonstration.
