Google is giving jobs even without degree, founder Sergey Brin told the reason

New Delhi: The traditional rules of getting a job in the world of technology are changing rapidly. College degree alone is no longer a guarantee of a well-paid job. The world’s leading tech company Google is also leading this change, where huge opportunities are opening up even for professionals without college degrees.

According to data from the Burning Glass Institute, between 2017 and 2022, there has been a major change in Google’s job postings in which a college degree was considered a mandatory condition. Whereas earlier a degree was necessary for 93 percent of the jobs, this figure has come down to 77 percent. This means that in just five years the share of people getting jobs in Google without a degree has increased by 16 percent. The reason for this change has been given by Google’s co-founder Sergey Brin himself.

Why is Google giving jobs to people without degrees?

Recently, Google co-founder Sergey Brin spoke openly about this trend while talking to engineering students of Stanford University. He told that Google has never been a company that hires only on the basis of academic background. The company has reduced the requirement of college degree for many positions.

According to a report, Sergey Brin has said that we have hired a lot of academic stars, but we have also hired a lot of people who do not have a bachelor’s degree. They just sit in a corner and learn things on their own.

AI’s deep impact on entry-level jobs

Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a major reason behind this change. AI has completely changed the face of entry-level jobs in a short period of time. Now companies are paying more attention to skills than degrees.

As AI automates entry-level tasks, companies are beginning to rethink what is the right way to identify talent. As a result, practical skills and ability to learn are being given more importance than formal degrees. This change is not happening because of universities, but because of those employers who are adopting skill-based hiring.

Why did Sergey Brin choose computer science?

Talking about his academic decisions, Sergey Brin said that he chose computer science not as a strategy but because of his interest. He said that I chose computer science because it was my passion. In a way, it was a very easy decision for me. I guess you could say I was lucky too because I was in such a transformative field.

Sergey Brin’s special advice to the youth

Brin also cautioned students from taking career decisions based only on the fear of automation. He said that AI can eliminate some disciplines, but in others its impact is different. Giving an example, he said that I will not switch to comparative literature because you think AI is good at coding. To be honest, AI is probably even better in comparative literature.

Not only Google, other tech companies are also on this path

This debate of degrees versus skills is not limited to Google alone. Big companies like Microsoft, Apple and Cisco are also now giving more importance to skills rather than degrees. In these companies too, skill-based hiring is being promoted instead of credential-based screening, due to which the requirement of degree is gradually being reduced.

Big statement from Elon Musk

Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk is also involved in this debate. He believes that in the era of AI, going to college is no longer that important. During a podcast, Elon Musk said regarding education and AI that going to medical college is now ‘useless’.

Referring to the rapidly growing role of AI in the medical field, he said that in the coming few years, AI robots can provide better medical facilities to humans and people can get better healthcare than human doctors.
