Shimron Hetmyer Named in West Indies Squad for Afghanistan T20Is
Brandon King will be leading the West Indies squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, with regular captain Shai Hope unavailable for selection due to his commitments in the SA20 2026.
Several regulars like Roston Chase, Akeal Hosein and Sherfane Rutherford will also miss the tour of the UAE for the same reason.
Meanwhile, Quentin Sampson earned his maiden international call-up following his remarkable performance in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) last year.
He will be replacing Rovman Powell, who has been rested along with Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd as part of the workload management.
Shamar Joseph and Evin Lewis have been returned to the squad after recovering from injuries, and Alzarri Joseph has not regained full fitness.
His progress will be monitored ahead of the selection calls for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
West Indies’ head coach Daren Sammy said that playing in sub-continent conditions will give their players an ideal preparation for the ICC event.
“The opportunity to play competitive matches in subcontinental conditions is ideal, as it assists with our preparations and confidence building ahead of what will be a competitive T20 World Cup,” said Daren Sammy.
“It also presents a valuable platform to assess players who missed significant time towards the end of 2025, as well as those stepping into important roles for this series,” he added.
The West Indies cricket team is scheduled to depart on January 14 and arrive in the UAE two days later.
The first match of the T20I series in Afghanistan vs West Indies series will be played on January 19 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah. The 2nd and 3rd T20I will be played on January 21 and 22 at the same venue.
